CHAPTER ELEVEN

Zak ushered them to sit in the living. He noted that Jake sat next to him on the couch, and scooted over a bit more until their legs touched. Though he was sure he was not meant to hear it, Jake’s sigh was audible.

“Your abilities are something we cannot even guess at,” Hakiim told Jake. “There has never been a heart mate to an Alpha who was also his Protector. Tell me what has come to pass since you and our Alpha have met.”

Jake told him of the nightmares. The people he saw, begging him for help. Of the burns that appeared on his wrists. Zak also spoke of his own nightmares. Through it all Hakiim listened with rapt attention. When they’d finished, Hakiim furrowed his brow in what appeared to be deep concentration.

“In our enclave we have seers. Those who see events, past and future. What you’re describing is the night Elizar’s forces attacked. There were hundreds killed, fires claimed dozens more. You could not know, yet you see it. You were already spirited away before the attack, so what you’ve described with Kell could not have happened, yet you bear the marks. I don’t know how to explain this. As for the Alpha, he is attuned to you. It is my guess that the two of you share a deep connection. Have you consummated your relationship yet?”

Jake looked at him blankly. Casey sighed. “Have you guys done the deed?”

Zak’s skin heated. “I should say we have not.”

Hakiim nodded and scratched his chin. “Interesting. When you have become one, your full abilities will be realized.”

Zak grunted. “What happens if we do not…mate?”

Hakiim looked horrified. “You are mates. There is no option. The two of you will share one heart, one soul. To deny that could cause your deaths. I’m sorry, I wish I knew more, but I don’t. As I said, your Protector never knew formal training. I cannot begin to know what remains unfound.”

“In my dream, someone told me your mind and body must be prepared for when your spirit returns. What’s that about?”

“That is what I speak of. Those who trained you, both of you, looked to your growth upon your destined path. Our Alpha—”

“My name is Zakiya,” Zak snapped.

Hakiim paled. “I cannot—”

“You can and you will. He is Jake, that is Casey, I am Zakiya. You will use these names.”

“Yes, Alpha.” Hakiim lowered his gaze. “Zakiya,” Hakiim started, his lips puckered as if he had eaten something sour, “trained to be a leader. You, Jake, grew a strong body so that when your soul, Zakiya, returned, you could protect him, and he you.”

“Well, I feel the love. Not sure why I’m here.”

“You played one of the most important roles of all. Our Protector has the overwhelming urge to do just that. When separated from his Alpha, he had no one with whom he was familiar. Jake’s caretakers found you and ensured that Jake would bond with you, helping him to fulfill his destiny. It’s also why they paid for you to attend college with him.
